A Brief History of Broomfield

Broomfield’s story begins in the mid-1800s, when homesteaders and farmers first settled the land along the old Cherokee Trail. The community took its name from broomcorn, a sorghum crop grown throughout the area and shipped to a broom factory in Denver. When the U.S. Postal Service opened a station here in 1884, the name Broomfield stuck.

The area’s fortunes shifted in 1885 when Adolph Zang, heir to the Zang Brewing fortune, purchased roughly 4,000 acres to build a model farm and horse ranch. For decades, the region was known as Zang’s Spur, named for the railroad branch built to serve his grain fields. A small farming town grew up around the intersection of 120th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, complete with a bank, a grocery, and the 1909 railway depot that still stands today.

Broomfield remained a quiet agricultural community until the Denver-Boulder Turnpike opened in 1952, connecting the area to both cities and setting off a wave of suburban growth. The city incorporated in 1961, and its population climbed quickly as neighborhoods like Broomfield Heights took shape. In 2001, after decades of annexations spread the city across four counties, residents voted to make Broomfield its own consolidated city and county, the second such arrangement in Colorado after Denver.

Living and Working in Broomfield

Today Broomfield is a thriving Front Range community that blends small-town character with big-city convenience. With more than 60 parks and nearly 300 miles of walking and biking trails, families here have plenty of room to run, explore, and stay active together. The city’s central location between Denver and Boulder has also made it a hub for major employers, giving working parents shorter commutes and more time at home with their kids.

Strong schools, family-friendly events like Broomfield Days, and a genuine sense of community make it an appealing place to raise children, which is part of why so many Broomfield families make the short trip to see us as their pediatric dentist Broomfield relies on for gentle, thorough care.
